Capturing Magic from Fall Colors to Christmas Trees: A Seasonal Recap

While most photographers wrap up their family sessions by Thanksgiving, this year I had the pleasure of extending the season into December. From the rolling hills of Helen Putnam Regional Park to the festive rows at Pronzini Christmas Tree Farms, here is a look at some recent highlights.

Overcoming the Mid-Day Sun at Helen Putnam Park

Helen Putnam Park in Petaluma is iconic for its golden grass and oak trees, but it can be a challenge during the early afternoon. Due to a tight Saturday schedule, we had to shoot while the sun was still high and harsh.

Thankfully, the park offers excellent “open shade” under its majestic oaks. By positioning the family carefully, we were able to use the trees to filter the light, resulting in soft, glowing portraits even outside of the typical “golden hour.”

Hidden Gems: St. Vincent’s School for Boys

A fellow photographer recommended Catholic Charities St. Vincent’s in San Rafael, and it is quickly becoming a favorite. It offers a unique blend of:

  • Classic Architecture: Stunning buildings that provide a timeless, sophisticated backdrop.
  • Natural Beauty: Mature trees that offer great depth and texture. The family was thrilled with the variety we captured in a single location!

A Festive December Mini-Session at Pronzini Farms

I was pleasantly surprised when a family reached out for a last-minute holiday session in December. Since I hadn’t launched my official holiday mini-sessions yet, I wanted to find a location that felt authentically “Christmas.”

Pronzini Christmas Tree Farms in Petaluma was the perfect host. Their gravel paths and endless rows of evergreens provided a beautiful, rustic backdrop. It was the perfect way to cap off the year and get this lovely family ready for their holiday cards.
